Our firm was presented with the opportunity to, in tandem with the principal architect’s personal residence, design a workspace of our own. From site selection to concept and schematics, this process allowed us to closely examine and explore the ethos and principles that have guided our design work: regional ecologies, site specificity, historical precedent, materialism, passive sustainability, urban infill, and neighborhood-sensitive renewal.

The program of the project challenged us to distill and simplify our concept of both home and studio: a simple residence for a single person, but with the spatial flexibility to accommodate aging parents when the need arose; a functional and professional office space, but with space that enabled and encouraged messy exploration, invention, and experimentation.
